CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS

Chiropractic care is all about maximizing your health potential by ensuring normal function of your nervous system.

This applies to newborns, kids, teenagers, and adults!

What is your nervous system? It is comprised of your brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. It controls every other system in your body! It tells your heart to beat, lungs to breathe, muscles to move, and everything in between! Your body and brain communicate through the nerves housed in your spinal cord - if there is any interference, those signals cannot effectively communicate. Dr. Rya focuses on removing interference through gentle and specific adjustments to restore optimal function and allow your body to function at its best.

Dr. Rya has studied several techniques including Webster, Diversified, Activator, and Sacro-Occipital Technique. She believes there is not a one size fits all when it comes to chiropractic care and will use whatever technique is most beneficial for you.

PRENATAL CHIROPRACTIC

SHOULD YOU SEE A CHIROPRACTOR DURING YOUR PREGNANCY?

You might be wondering, should I see a chiropractor during my pregnancy? Why?

As you know, your body goes through many changes as your baby grows! Over the course of 40 or so weeks, almost every one of your body systems changes to support you and baby. Of course, these changes  can impact how you feel day to day.

The forward shift in your center of gravity can cause your head to drift forward putting more strain on your neck, leading to neck pain and headaches. Growing breasts can increase strain on the back and disrupt normal posture, causing aches and pains in the shoulders and mid back. As baby grows and starts to move around, this increases the strain on the lower ribs and thoracic spine which can cause rib and back pain. Your growing belly causes your low back to curve more (this is called an increase lumbar lordosis) which places more strain on your low back and abdominal muscles.

A key hormone produced during pregnancy is relaxin. It causes joints to loosen so your body can accommodate pregnancy and delivery! Unfortunately, it might also aggravate even minor injuries and imbalances. As relaxin loosens the ligaments in your pelvis, it also assists in expanding your pubic symphysis to allow for delivery. About 20% of women experience pain or “lightening crotch” as a result of this widening.

Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can help alleviate these aches and pains, and support wellness for you and baby!

Studies have shown that consistent chiropractic care during pregnancy can:

-promote optimal fetal position

-decrease back pain

-decrease pelvic pain

-decrease round ligament pain

-provide sciatica relief

-decrease morning sickness

-shorten labor

-decrease chance of back labor

-decrease interventions like use of forceps & C-section

-decrease need for medication during labor

-decrease risk of preterm labor

Patients who received care throughout pregnancy reported:

-less indigestion & reflux

-less fatigue and more energy

-less anxiety

-better sleep

Dr. Rya is certified in the Webster Technique which was developed specifically to treat women throughout pregnancy.

It focuses on maintaining alignment of the pelvis and surrounding structures, so baby has room to get into

optimal birthing position!

Specific adjustments are gently delivered based on how your body best responds. Consistent chiropractic care throughout pregnancy regulates your musculoskeletal and nervous system to help your body function as it was designed to.

PRIMITIVE REFLEX TESTING

IN KIDS:

Primitive reflexes are reflexive movements that develop inside the womb. They are responsible for helping us survive the first year of life and create movements. When an infant is born, their brain is not developed enough to create voluntary or intentional thoughts or movements. Reflexes are present so they can eat, grab, roll, crawl, kick and generally survive outside the womb. As babies mature and begin to coordinate and initiate movements intentionally, these reflexes should integrate (or go away). If they don't integrate, movements are not properly coordinated, and their brain cannot move on to a higher level of operating. This can lead to significant motor and emotional delays.

IN ADULTS:

As adults, it is possible to have retained primitive reflexes. They could have never integrated, or you could have experienced emotional or physiological stress that triggered them to resurface. Our nervous system controls all systems in our body. When we encounter repetitive or significant stress, it can cause our body to get "stuck" in fight-or-flight (called your sympathetic nervous system). Often times, we see primitive reflexes reemerge during this time as our body tries to keep us safe from perceived danger. To read more about your sympathetic nervous system, check out this post.

Retained primitive reflexes can be found through a simple exam. Once it is determined which (if any) reflexes are still present,

Dr. Rya will demonstrate and assign exercises that will train the brain and integrate those reflexes!

CRANIAL ADJUSTMENTS

Did you know chiropractors can adjust your skull? Dr. Rya assesses and corrects any issues with the movement of your cranial bones, and tension in the soft tissue that covers your skull. This ensures the cerebrospinal fluid can flow freely, nerves can communicate without interference, and tension is reduced throughout your body.  It can also make cervical adjustments smoother and more efficient!

Each and every patient, from baby to adult, gets checked and adjusted, as cranial tension can cause an array of symptoms!
